Placental abruption occurs when the placenta partially or fully detaches from the walls of the uterus during pregnancy. It is a serious condition, one that can result in severe bleeding in a mother or surrogate and which may cause oxygen deprivation that leads to hypoxic ischemic encephalopathy (HIE) in an infant.
